Bees Make Honey

The Harlequin Invasion
Okay, so I’m torn! Walking in the warm sunshine yesterday afternoon I spotted this ladybird clinging to a sloe berry. I watched in awe as the rays of sunlight bounced from the bug’s shiny coat of armour. The contrast of the spotted orange against the muted dark blues of the fruit really looked beautiful. And then it occurred to me that this ladybird may appear angelic but in fact it is a Harlequin. Noooooo! This insect is a destructive invader introduced to Europe to control aphids that is putting our British ladybirds into decline. And so, here is a fine example of humankind interfering with nature, sadly one that went a bit wrong!
Flutterby
The Butterfly Forest at Bristol Zoo makes my heart skip a beat. Not because it’s a manufactured tropical rainforest in suburbia. But because it contains some of the globes truly wonderful butterflies. I adore these unique & delicate creatures. This was my favourite, with its striking patchwork of orange tones, yellow strokes and white specks.
Shortly after I had taken this photograph, we were reprimanded for handling the wildlife. Ooops! Great shot though!
